When should I get advice from a lawyer?

It is always okay to seek independent legal advice. Remember that you can ask for advice from a lawyer without hiring them to represent you. It is always a good idea to get independent legal advice before signing a document.

Only a lawyer can provide legal advice. None of the programs provided by the Family Law Centre offer legal advice. The Family Law Navigator does not provide legal advice.

Here are some options outside of the Family Law Centre:

  • Community Legal Information offers a lawyer referral service. If you are eligible, you can access up to 45 minutes with a lawyer for $25 +tax.
  • RISE offers lawyer referrals for victims of intimate partner violence. If you are eligible, you can access up to 4 hours of legal advice for free.
  • Justice Avenues offers lawyer referrals for people who self-identify as racialized. If you are eligible, you can access up to 4 hours of legal advice for free.
  • Family Legal Aid provides direct legal advice and representation to eligible individuals.
  • You can hire a private practice lawyer. Contact a law firm and explain what you need help with. You can find contact information about PEI law firms by searching in an internet browser. There is also the PEI Lawyer Directory at www.lawsocietypei.ca/find-a-lawyer
